Chocolate Chip & Pecan Meringue Bars

Ingredients 4 large egg whites 1/2 cup butter, softened 1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar, divided 1/2 cup sugar

2 large egg yolks, room temperature 3 tablespoons 2% milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 3/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Directions Leave egg whites in a small bowl at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Preheat oven to 325°. Cream butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and sugar in a large basin for 5-7 minutes until creamy. Mix egg yolks, milk, and vanilla. Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in another bowl; gradually add to creamed mixture. Grease a 15x10x1-inch baking pan.

Mix egg whites on medium speed with clean beaters until frothy. Add remaining 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating on high until dissolved. Beat till thick and shiny. Mix in pecans and chocolate chips. Spread on pan dough.

Bake 25-30 minutes on a lower rack until meringue is gently golden. Cool pan on wire rack entirely. Cut bars with a serrated knife. Airtight container storage.
